I've been on the trains often in the past two weeks and this sign is omnipresent. To say that the Italian train system is dysfunctional would be an understatement. There are better systems in the developing world - I would even suggest Amtrak offers better service. Stations are simply filthy, pavements resemble roads in war zones, and the battered rolling stock is far beyond repair. The flagship trains like the Eurostar offer only a marginal improvement. I travelled almost exclusivey by train here from 1994 until 2000 and I would never have imagined the system could basically crash. Stranger yet, no signs of any calling to account.
